Transpac Managers recently covered a drilling operation that a customer was completing in New Mexico.

The customer initially planned to TD the well at 20,000 ft, but th e tools stuck at around 13,000 TMD when they experienced tight hole conditions and then a loss of pressure.

The drillpipe severed above the BHA, and after unsuccessful fishing attempts, the entire BHA was left downhole.

Transpac Ma nagers paid the claim of $540,000.

T Last week, we showed the results from a LinkedIn poll that we conducted last year, asking how frequently you thought downhole losses were occurring. Here's a reminder of the results below:
- 1 to 10 wells: 22%
- 11 to 20 wells: 29%
- 21 to 40 wells: 19%
- 41+ wells: 30%

We checked these against our database (30 years and counting of information) and have found that drilling losses are becoming more frequent.
- Historical losses: Average 1 in every 30 wells
- Last two years: Average 1 in every 22 wells

T ranspac Managers provided downhole tool insurance to a customer in Texas. While drilling, the mud motor experienced mechanical failure and the BHA was lost downhole. Transpac covered the loss.

Covering a Wireline Operation In Europe!

Transpac Managers covered a wireline operation that was being completed in Europe by a customer.

After running the wireline logging tools at a depth of 906m, crews tried to lower the logging tools to the next test point. They realized the equipment was stuck in the wellbore. Operations to recover the stuck equipment were carried out but were unsuccessful.

The insured logging tools were lost-in-hole as the result of encountering a portion of the wellbore that had washed out. It is believed the tools became differentially stuck as a result.

Transpac Managers paid the claim of $144,000.

Data Collected Over the Past 30 Years!

Based on data collected by Transpac Managers over the past 30 years, we've seen a 33% increase in mechanical issues, leading to downhole losses, over the past two years.

- Mechanical sticking: the limiting or prevention of motion of the drillstring by anything other than differential pressure sticking. Mechanical sticking can be caused by junk in the hole, wellbore geometry anomalies, cement, keyseats, or a buildup of cuttings in the annulus.

- Differential sticking: typically occurs when high-contact forces caused by low reservoir pressures, high wellbore pressures, or both, are exerted over a sufficiently large area of the drillstring.

- Other: equipment failure, fire, blowout

Pipeline Inline Inspection Tool Insurance!

Our Pipeline Inline Inspection Tool Insurance:

As smart pigs (check out their uses below) are becoming more advanced, their costs are reaching up to $1 million dollars. Without insurance, pipeline companies are responsible for the costs if the tools get stuck or damaged in the pipeline. If the pipeline runs under a waterway or urban infrastructure, tools could be impossible to retrieve.

Smart pigs are pipeline inspection tools that consist of large pieces of machinery combined with powerful technology to maximize pipeline maintenance. These inspection tools provide pipeline condition data, which helps gauge the health and integrity of the pipes.

Smart pigs also ensure that transmission of the product does not stop due to pipeline integrity issues, which can be disastrous. They can be inserted into the pipeline at a valve or pump station where the tool can be loaded into a receiver. The receiver is closed and sealed, and the flow of the pipeline product can be directed to launch the tool into the main line of the pipeline. A similar setup is located downstream, where the tool is directed out of the main line into a receiver, removed from the pipeline, and the recorded data retrieved for analysis and reporting.

Smart pigs can measure several different things from inside the pipeline, including restrictions and deformations of the pipe, as well as metal loss. Odometer wheels are used to measure exactly where the pig is within the pipeline.

- Stress corrosion cracking
- General corrosion
- Pitting corrosion
- Gouges
- Dents
- Anomalous weld seams
- Longitudinal cracks
- Longitudinal grooves

While drilling a multilateral well in Canada, a customer experienced a loss of pump pressure at 1,212m MD. The 4-in. drillpipe had separated at a connection.

Effects and Risks of Stuck Pipe!

Stuck pipe, which can cause the drillstring to be broken off or lost in the hole, can:
- Increase downtime and lost drilling time working to free the pipe

If you can't get unstuck, many have left the fish in the hole as it is too difficult or costly to retrieve. And if all else fails, you may have to perform a sidetrack, which further increases time and costs.

Mechanical sticking: occurs as a result of inadequate hole cleaning, formation instability, or accumulation of cuttings.

Differential sticking: a problem that occurs when drilling a well with a greater wellbore pressure than formation pressure. The drillpipe is pressed against the wellbore and becomes stuck to the wall.

Tool failure: the tools break or separate, leaving a portion of the downhole equipment left in the well.

Fire: can be caused by a fire in the wellbore that damages the downhole tools.

Blowout: uncontrolled release of crude oil and/or natural gas from an oil well or gas well after pressure control systems have failed. Any tools in the well at the time of blowout will be damaged.

The program will cover incurred costs when retaining the services o f third-party fishing companies to retrieve or free stuck downhole tools.

Coverage can only be obtained for well sections where BHAs / equipment are covered by Transpac for downhole tool insurance. The insured will be required to obtain the coverage for all wells in a program, not pick and choose wells to buy the fishing coverage.

Coverage will commence when an event occurs where the insured tools become stuck and the operations taking place immediately before the event can no longer be carried out.

A claim can be made if the attempt to free stuck tools is successful or unsuccessful with standard deductibles to apply in both scenarios.

A directional drilling company was drilling a well to 7,732 ft MD in the Southern US with a bottomhole assembly insured by Transpac Managers.

At 5,926 feet MD, the mud motor separated at the shock sub mandrel and the motor become stuck downhole. While operations to recover the stuck equipment were carried out, they were unsuccessful.

Transpac Managers helped the client cover financial losses in excess of $150,000 that occurred when the directional drilli ng equipment was stuck downhole.
